What is Learn to play?

This program is intended for children with limited experience of hockey and/or skating. and is designed to offer them an introduction to hockey. We invite children between the ages of 3 and 12 to participate. Children are instructed on the fundamentals of skating and hockey.

How much ice time do skaters receive?

Skaters receive forty-five minutes of on ice instruction each session during the Learn to Play season. This will usually occur on a Sunday afternoon. Coaches are on the ice at all times to work with all skaters.

What happens during the on ice sessions?

During Learn to Play, the ice is divided into three sections. Skaters are divided between these section based on skating ability:

    1. Children that have never been on skates before.
    2. Children with skating experience but limited hockey experience.
    3. Children with skating and hockey experience

As children progress during Learn to Play, they are moved between these three levels at the discretion of the coaching staff.

What equipment does my child need to participate?

All skaters are required to wear full hockey gear during on ice sessions. If you do not have gear, Oregon Hockey, Inc. has bags of gear available to rent. While these bags contain much of the gear needed, we ask that you provide: mouth guard, jock/jane, stick, and skates. Rental skates are available at the rink.
