Girls Hockey
Program Introduction
The Stoughton, Oregon, and McFarland (STORM) youth hockey associations are teaming up to offer full time all-girls hockey teams for players in their communities for the second straight year. Our goal is to develop skaters together from 8U through 14U who will play on the cooperative high school team, the Icebergs.
Last year our teams had fun and the majority of teams qualified and competed at their respective state tournaments!
The Icebergs high school team typically includes players from the following communities: Stoughton, Oregon, McFarland, Monona Grove, Deerfield, Evansville, Cambridge, Lodi, and Poynette.
When additional skaters are needed to form an all-girls team, or when a nearby association does not have a team available for a skater, the Jr. Icebergs will also roster skaters from other associations. If you are from an association that does not offer girls hockey, we would love to have you play as well with the Jr. Icebergs!
Team Structure for 2026–2027
Each association will host one or more all-girls team(s) at a specific age level. The long-term goal is for every girl to have a chance to play at all three rinks (Stoughton, McFarland, Oregon) during her youth hockey years and to offer two teams at each age level to enhance development with like skilled players if numbers allow.
'26-'27 TEAM HOSTING ASSIGNMENTS:
- U8 Girls (2018/2019) – Goal is to have a team in Stoughton, Oregon, and McFarland if numbers allow. If every association cannot offer a team, a joint team will be hosted by McFarland
- 2 Practices in McFarland or home associations as permitted by numbers
- U10 Girls (2016/2017) – Hosted by Oregon
- 2-3 On Ice Practices in Oregon or McFarland, Dryland Training, Goalie Training.
- U12 Girls (2014/2015) – Hosted by Stoughton + Verona
- This year we will partner with Verona and STORM associations to ensure strong team size and competition levels
- 2-3 On Ice Practices in Stoughton, Dryland Training, Goalie Training.
- U14 Girls (2012/2013) – Due to lack of interest, we encourage girls to reach out to the Polar Caps, Mavericks, or Dragons.
Tryout evaluations will be held to place skaters on the appropriate team based on skill level if there are enough skaters for more than one team. Having two teams at every level is a priority for the Jr. Icebergs this year as it went very well at the 10U level this season. These teams will be looking for full-time or primary team commitments with limited opportunities for cross-rostering.
Player Registration & Eligibility
- Girls living in Stoughton, Oregon, and McFarland should register with their home association and will follow that association’s fees, service hour requirements, and policies. We support service hour and policy reciprocity to make it easier on families who also have other skaters at their home association.
- Players from nearby associations not listed above who DO NOT offer girls-only teams may register with the host association for their age group.
Example: A U10 player from Monroe would register with Oregon.
Practices & Training
Girls’ teams may practice together or rotate through skill stations. Teams may share ice with coed teams from the host association to maximize ice utilization and keep costs manageable. Practices may take place on full-ice sheets or in studio rinks, such as the McFarland Starion Rink.
WEEKLY PRACTICE SCHEDULE:
- On-Ice Practices
- U8: 2 on ice practices per week
- U10, U12, U14: 3 on ice practices per week
- Goalie-Specific Sessions
- 1 session per week
- Dryland Training
- 1 session per week 10U, 12U
Games & Events
8U teams aim to play one game each Sunday, with one or two tournaments throughout the season running December 1 until March 1
Travel 10U, 12U, and 14U Full-time teams aim to play 30+ games during the season. This includes:
- 2–3 games on most weekend days (Friday evening through Sunday evening)
- 2 tournaments
- WAHA Playdowns
- WAHA State Tournament
Coaching Staff
Coaching assignments and contact details will be shared after team placements are finalized. Interested coaches are encouraged to apply, which will be approved by the Jr. Icebergs coaching committee.
Program Costs
Program fees will be determined during the summer prior to registration. The goal this year is to establish standardized, all-inclusive fees for each age level, covering practices, games, and tournaments.
Equipment & Apparel
Each age level will determine whether to purchase new jerseys for the season or use existing Jr. Icebergs jerseys. Purchased jerseys may be customized with the skater’s preferred number and name. Loaner jerseys cannot be customized. All participants must register with USA Hockey.
